Madrugada, the association that supports people with life-limiting illnesses and their families, has announced its ninth anniversary coffee morning taking place on Saturday, February 24, at its Support Centre in Luz from 10.30am to 1pm.
In the past, Madrugada’s coffee mornings have coincided with Macmillan’s “World Biggest Coffee Morning”, which may have led to some confusion as many believed that some of the funds raised for Macmillan’s work in the UK were passed to Madrugada to help with the work here.
“But this was not so, nor would we have expected them to do so,” said the Algarve association in a statement to the press. “So we felt it would be much more appropriate to hold our own anniversary coffee morning to raise funds solely for Madrugada.”
Macmillan has made giant advances since its foundation in 1911 and nowadays provides invaluable care and support to millions of cancer sufferers and their families exclusively in the United Kingdom. “Madrugada benefited incalculably from its professional association with Macmillan,” it continued.
However, Madrugada is now working in its “own small way” to provide specialised end-of-life care and support for anyone in the west Algarve who is facing a life-limiting illness. Although founded only nine years ago, the association has already supported over 100 patients with its ‘hospice at home’ service, “a unique offering in Portugal”.
Madrugada is able to provide its end-of-life services free of charge thanks to the “public’s generosity and donations”, as well as the work of volunteers at its charity shops and events.
The Support Centre can be found on Rua Direita 100a in Luz.
