Madrugada elects new president

Madrugada, the charitable organisation that provides care and support to people facing life limiting illness, has announced the appointment of Carol Spires as its new president. Carol takes on this voluntary role to replace Alison Blair who stepped down in November.

Carol brings a wealth of experience to Madrugada. She moved to Portugal some 11 years ago and, with her partner, has developed a successful property management business servicing the western Algarve.

Her background in not-for-profit ventures in the UK and her involvement with The Samaritans as a volunteer and a member of the director team, with responsibility for recruiting and selecting new volunteers, brings valuable new perspectives and ideas to Madrugada.

In the coming years, the president will lead the management board to increase both volunteer and membership numbers and to further develop Madrugada’s offering of palliative care in the community.

“Carol’s focus will be to build on Madrugada’s unique hospice-at-home service and to augment its Support Centre offering through greater community engagement and by developing palliative care awareness and training programmes,” said Madrugada in a press statement.

“The success of the hospice movement in countries such as the UK, Germany and Holland is attributable to local communities identifying with, and taking ownership of, their local hospice provision through volunteering and fundraising activities. These goals will underpin Madrugada’s strategy for 2017 and beyond.”
