Madrugada Associação is celebrating its sixth anniversary with a new look. Suzi Steinhofel of Design Works has created a logo that is “fresh and light whilst capturing the imagination and reflecting the charity’s ethos beautifully”, says Madrugada president Alison Blair.
She is also delighted that people across the central and western region of the Algarve are beginning to understand the positive impact of this much-needed home-based care provision.
Madrugada’s professional clinical team has already supported and cared for over 60 people, each preferring to remain in their own home for end-of-life care. Palliative care offers a person-centred holistic approach by providing clinical, emotional, spiritual and social support, extending this care to close family members and carers.
The service is provided without charge but, as a non-profit organisation, Madrugada relies on contributions towards the cost of nursing. “Being unable to contribute financially is never a barrier to someone benefitting from care,” says Alison Blair, and the association works hard to raise the funds necessary to support this service.
The Madrugada team also offers a range of therapies and activities at its support centre in Luz.
“Ultimately, the association would like to open a small residential end-of-life care unit (hospice) in the Algarve,” says Alison, “and then replicate the idea across the Algarve. The biggest challenge lies in finding perfect locations.” A capital appeal to fund this project is underway.
Currently, the association generates income through three charity shops: two Encore Boutiques, located in Luz and Almancil, and a Homeware & Furniture store also in Luz. In addition, Madrugada runs a nursing agency known as Hibiscus in Lagos and all profit goes to the charity.
There are a number of fundraising events throughout the year designed to support the association’s services.
