Early forecasts pointed to 1.5 million young people travelling to Lisbon for World Youth Day. These have since reduced by a good 500,000. But still, there will be a lot of visitors to Lisbon for this bi-annual event that travels the world

Madrid to send over 130 buses full of pilgrims to World Youth Day

At least 133 buses are to take Roman Catholic pilgrims to next month’s World Youth Day event in Lisbon from Madrid – a city that already has six sports halls prepared to welcome thousands of people from different countries in transit to the Portuguese capital. These logistics have been arranged by the Roman Catholic archdiocese of Madrid, which in a written response to questions from Lusa emphasised that there are congregations and lay movements in the city that are also preparing their own buses and spaces. The countdown is on for this event that has Lisboetas desperately planning an escape from what will undoubtedly be five days at least of sweltering chaos in and around the World Youth Day riverside venues.
