Madeira trio suspected of corruption ‘still in preventive custody’

With the future of the PSD government of Madeira still undecided, the situation of the three official suspects arrested over a week ago remains a point of major controversy. Former mayor of Funchal Pedro Calado, and businessmen Avelino Farinha and Custódio Correia remain in preventive custody, with official questioning still underway. Critics say the time lag is ‘inadmissible’, calling for an overhaul of judicial procedure in cases such as these in future. Bail measures cannot be decided before all three men have been fully questioned, something that may not be concluded before tomorrow at the earliest, say reports, which also remark on how journalists covering this case have been subjected to increasingly strict rules when in court – even being escorted to the toilet.
