The sloth of Portuguese justice is well demonstrated by news today that the case into the deaths of 29 German tourists in a bus accident in Madeira in 2019 is to be archived, because the only person held responsible, the driver, has himself died. The driver died in hospital where he was receiving palliative care, explain reports. He was facing 29 charges of negligent homicide and three further crimes of causing grevious bodily harm through negligence. The case had not yet reached what is known as the ‘pre-trial phase’, where a judge listens to the evidence to see if a trial should move forwards.
