After numerous high-profile news stories on tourist deaths and cliff plunges, Madeira has finally been awarded its own specialised GNR search-and-rescue team, which will be on the ground ready for work very soon.
The six-strong team has been undergoing training, Madeira’s lieutenant-general Silva Couto declared at a ceremony in which two new police vehicles costing €50,000 were presented to the island’s GNR command.
