Luxury yacht runs aground on Ilha Deserta

Private party was going on when boat hit sandbank “at high speed”

No-one was injured but it was a shock nonetheless: a €700,000 ‘luxury yacht’ hit a sandbank in Ria Formosa recently, ending up ‘high and dry’ on Ilha Deserta.

The accident is being ‘investigated’ by Maritime Police, aware that it happened in the early hours of the morning, in the context of a party onboard.

The owner of the yacht is described as “a businessman connected to the car rental sector”, writes Correio da Manhã.

According to reports, the boat was landlocked for a few days as dredging equipment was mobilised to ease it off the sandbank.

The boat has since been towed to Vilamoura Marina for repairs, says the paper.
