Occupancy levels at four and five star tourist developments in the Algarve increased by 3.1 per cent in February, compared to the same month in 2009, according to figures released by AHETA, the region’s hotel and tourism accommodation association .
In addition, the number of Dutch tourists increased in the region by 4.8 per cent in the same period. Overall, however, the region saw a fall of 7.7 per cent in tourist accommodation occupancy levels last month when compared to February 2009, with the greatest decrease in Albufeira.
Only Loulé saw an increase of 18.9 per cent compared to last year, while Monte Gordo in Vila Real de Santo António had the highest occupancy levels with 74.6 per cent.
The number of British visitors staying in tourist accommodation in the region fell by 24.8 per cent and German visitors by 28.8 per cent.
