Luton Airport flights suspended following evacuation due to suspicious item

All flights to Luton Airport were suspended this afternoon (September 8) after the airport was evacuated over a suspicious item found in the security search area.
Police have since carried out a controlled explosion of the item which, although deemed “suspicious”, did not present a “wider danger”.
Earlier, the airport had published an announcement on its website saying that the decision to evacuate the airport and suspend flights was taken with the police to “ensure the safety and security of passengers and staff”.
However, it is still unknown how this event will affect today’s flights.
A spokeswoman for the airport had already said: “Passengers are advised to contact their airlines to establish the status of their flights. We understand passengers will be frustrated by the delays they are experiencing.”
The Resident tried unsuccessfully to contact Portuguese airport operator ANA regarding national flights to Luton.
