Lunch raises €1,300 for cat sanctuary project

A project to set up a sanctuary for “retired and disabled streets cats” in Carvoeiro is one step closer to coming true after a fundraising lunch held in the town’s A Tasquinha restaurant on June 14 raised €1,300.

Nearly 100 people turned up for the event, which featured a vegetarian meal, a raffle and a performance by singer-songwriter Johnny White.

The lunch also gave supporters the opportunity to sponsor a disabled cat by featuring decorative bunting and placemats showing each cat’s appealing photograph and heart-rending story.

The sanctuary project, entitled ‘Mr No Ears Rescue and Retirement Sanctuary’, is being developed by Amigos dos Gatos do Algarve and is named after Mr No Ears – aka the ‘Lion King of Albufeira’ and “one the mascots of the Algarve’s street cat community”.

It will be built on the grounds of the Carvoeiro Cat Charity.

Fundraising is still ongoing.
