“Lunatic” high speed car chase ends with two in hospital after shots fired in Sintra

Two men are in hospital following a shooting and “lunatic” high speed car chase along the IC19 near Sintra in the early hours of Wednesday morning. It is not known what the men’s conditions are nor how they came to be injured. All that has been revealed is that the Mercedes in which they were travelling crashed as it was pursued by police, and one of the injured “threw himself three metres down into a stream”.

The confusion began after the duo, accompanied by a 20-year-old woman, are believed to have fired shots outside a bar in nearby Queluz. The reason again is unclear but seems to centre on a disagreement with bouncers, writes national tabloid Correio da Manhã.

One of the men is understood to have drawn a knife, while the other began firing shots.

As police were called, the pair made off with the young woman, and thus begun the “lunatic” drive along what is already one of the country’s most notorious highways for accidents and erratic driving.

At a bend near Amadora, the men’s Mercedes careered off the road, and police finally caught up with it.

The men, both in their 30s, are understood to have already been charged with dangerous driving and illegal possession of weapons.
