Low pensions

Around three-quarters of Portugal’s 2.5 million pensioners are living on a minimum salary of between 250 and 500 euros a month.

The shocking figures, published on Monday by the General Confederation of Portuguese Workers union (CGTP), include 100,000 retired civil servants.

The other quarter is divided between those who have pensions between one and two minimum salaries and others who receive over two minimum salaries.

Up to 3,700 (0.9 per cent) of pensioners live with 4,000 euros or more a month while 72,500 live on between 1,000 and 1,500 euros a month.
