Local swimmer Miguel Pires is currently in Athens, representing Portugal at this year’s Olympic Games. The talented 20-year-old is the only athlete attending the games to come from the Loulé area.
He has become something of a local celebrity in the town, with Câmara President, Seruca Emídio, calling a press conference to wish him well in Greece and members of his local sports club, the Louletano Desportos, cheering him as he left.
Miguel is also set to become a national sports hero. He has already won the 400m freestyle and won silver in the 100m freestyle in the national championships and shone at the recent European Championships in Madrid. A spokesman from Loulé Câmara told The Resident: “His presence at the Olympics is already a great victory for Miguel Pires, for his club and for our concelho.”
