Loulé opens applications for eight plots at community gardens

Loulé Council is accepting applications from local citizens for eight plots at the town’s community gardens (Hortas Urbanas).

Says the council, it is an opportunity for “new people who are interested in cultivating a little piece of land and getting fresh agricultural products for personal consumption.”

Applications can be made by filling out the application form, available on the Municipality’s website, where the garden’s operating regulations can also be consulted.

“With food prices, especially fruits and vegetables, skyrocketing in recent months, these gardens can be an important support for families in the municipality with greater socio-economic vulnerability,” says Loulé Council.

“On the other hand, community gardens promote organic agriculture, which is essential for improving the environmental sustainability of urban spaces and balancing the city’s landscape,” the local authority states, adding that the gardens also play a role in “improving social cohesion and strengthening community values,” as these are spaces where people can “socialise and share knowledge.”

The plots are available for free but require compliance with the established rules, the correct use of available resources, and healthy coexistence among users, the council says.
