Loulé has retained its ranking as the most environmentally sustainable borough in Portugal.
For the sixth time, and fifth year running, the municipality was awarded the ECO XII distinction from the European Blue Flag Association during a ceremony in Coimbra last week.
Loulé received an 86.6% score in the ECO XII index, which evaluates everything from the quality of air and water to nature conservation and environmental education.
“It’s the acknowledgment of our very hard work, but it’s also motivation for us to continue improving our percentage,” said mayor Vítor Aleixo.
Cascais, Guimarães, Águeda, Lousã and Pombal trailed Loulé in the latest index, all receiving scores above 80%.
