Loulé Islamic baths classified as national monument

The Islamic Baths of Loulé, in the Algarve, will be classified as a national monument on Saturday, according to a decree published by the government in Diário da República on Friday.

“This decree classifies as a monument of national interest the Islamic Baths of Loulé, […], assigning them the designation of ‘national monument'”,  according to the government law, signed by the prime minister, António Costa, and the minister of culture, Pedro Adão e Silva.

The Islamic Baths of Loulé, discovered in 2006, are “the first and, so far, only buildings of this type archaeologically documented in Portugal, as well as one of the most complete complexes of its kind identified in the Iberian Peninsula,” says the decree.
