ACCORDING TO a council spokesman, Loulé Câmara is legally unable to assist Vilamoura Rugby Club, who appealed for help to replace their clubhouse and changing rooms that were damaged by a mini tornado in 2006.
José Quadros da Silva, director of the socio-cultural department at Loulé Câmara, told The Resident: “The playing field is located on land that belongs to the private company Lusort, so it is illegal for Loulé Câmara to carry out any investment there.”
He added that Loulé Câmara had spent a total of 10,000 euros on helping the club this year (see The Resident edition, November 21).
“The club’s projected budget for 2008 was 33,700 euros and Loulé Câmara was the main donor of funds” he said.
At the time The Resident went to press on Wednesday, no one from Lusort was available to comment.
