After winning the regional South/Islands heats of the competition earlier this year, chef Louis Anjos from the Suites Alba Resort & Spa has picked up the award for Chef of the Year (CCA) 2012.
Organised by Edições do Gosto, the final of the national competition took place on November 28 and 29 at the Lisbon Hotel and Tourism School, where the young chef beat seven other finalists to the prize.
Now in its 23rd year, Louis Anjos became only the second chef ever from the Algarve to take the title after impressing the judges with a four-course menu created using the ingredients in a surprise hamper.
With his starter of Ser-ra cheese, pumpkin and mushrooms, followed by a fish course of mackerel with Mediterranean flavours, a meat course of leg, loin and sweetbreads of lamb, and a dessert of pineapple, coriander and coconut, the head chef from the resort near Carvoeiro was awarded the most points for the quality and technical skill of his dishes.
The main prize was an internship at the one-Michelin-star restaurant O Viajante in London, headed by Portuguese chef Nuno Mendes.
