Loose horses killed in Olhão

Two wandering horses have been killed in separate accidents in the space of half-an-hour in Olhão last week. The problem of loose animals causing havoc on roads seems to be spiralling. These last two bring the total number of horses found wandering on Olhão’s roads recently to more than 10, writes Correio da Manhã newspaper.
The latest accidents took place last Wednesday evening. The first was at Belmonte de Cima and involved a horse being run over by a truck. Half an hour later, at Belmonte de Baixo, another animal was fatally hit on railway lines by the Faro-Olhão train. No one else was hurt, confirmed the authorities.
The GNR has identified one of the owners of the dead animals. These cases come only weeks after a loose horse on a main road in Évora caused four deaths in a head-on accident.
