A GROUP of golfers who have raised 350,000 euros for local charities since first getting together on Vilamoura courses in 1998 are now looking forward to their 2007 event.
Every January they compete in a Stableford Pairs Better Ball tournament, now held on the Victoria Clube de Golfe, and the day is always a sell out, ending with a gala dinner and show at the Vilamoura Casino.
This year’s tournament raised 50,000 euros, distributed between the Obra da Nossa Senhora das Candeias in Olhão, Instituto D. Francisco Gomes ”Casa dos Rapazes” in Faro, Associação de Surdos do Algarve for the deaf and the Associação de Portadores de Trissomia 21 do Algarve for Down Syndrome sufferers.
The guest of honour at the gala dinner is always the British Ambassador to Portugal and dozens of local and not so local businesses sponsor each of the 18 holes of golf, the putting green, the driving range and offer superb prizes for the tombola and auction, held at the dinner.
The main sponsors for the 2007 event are Atelier do Sul Consultores de Design, BBVA Vilamoura Branch, Lusotur Golfes, Newlyn Developments Portugal, Oceanico Developments and Solverde. Holiday gifts have been donated by the Relais & Chateaux Casa Velha do Palheiro country house hotel and The Cliff Bay hotel and from Dunas Douradas Beach Club in the Algarve a royal Caribbean cruise.
Hundred’s of individual prizes are also donated, including more holiday gifts from BA/GB Airways, TAP, Lapa Palace Lisbon, Vila Joya, Le Méridien Penina, Le Méridien Dona Filipa & San Lorenzo Golf, Vila Vita Parc, Praia D’El Rey Golf & Beach Resort, Penha Longa Hotel & Golf Resort and Termas de Monchique. The tombola and auctions are highlights of the event and raise considerable sums.
The 10th consecutive event will take place at the Victoria Golf Course, Vilamoura, followed by the gala dinner and show at the Vilamoura Casino, on Saturday, January 20.
