A community turned up in force near Braga at the weekend to stop loggers cutting down ancient cork trees. According to Jorge Magalhães, president of the parish council of Mira de Tibães, ICNF forestry officials had given the green light to the felling of 16 trees – 10 of which were cut down before locals had time to act. Vowing to the bottom of the issue, Magalhães said the trees should have been protected.
