Between July 1 and September 30 there were 235 more divorces in Portugal than during the same period pre-pandemic. Pundits are interpreting this as a direct result of ‘lockdown’ where families were ‘thrown together’ for far greater periods of time, with many couples both trying to work from home with children ‘tele schooling’ in the same room. Says Público, the number of weddings was also reduced due to pandemic restrictions.
In numbers, divorces for the three-month period totalled 3,862 with weddings coming in at 16,195 – 58% down on figures for 2019.
