Local baker Filipe Martins presents gigantic festive cake for charity

It would not be considered Christmas in Olhão without news that local pastry chef Filipe Martins was once again baking his traditional gigantic Bolo Rei (Portuguese festive fruit cake).
The enterprising Kubidoce baker will be presenting his 70m cake – truly fit for a king – on December 13 at 10.30am in front of the town’s church, right next to his third and recently-opened outlet in Olhão.
As always, local scouts will be joining Martins’ team to hand out slices of cake for donations (minimum €0,20) which will then go to a local charity.
Instructors from a local gym will be on hand this year to keep people “active” as they delight in Martins’ expertise.
Besides using traditional ingredients of nuts and crystallised fruit, the young master baker has tricks up his sleeve including carob, chocolate and orange.
To bake the 600-kilo cake, he will be using over 150 kilos of flour, 600 eggs, 30 kilos of sugar, 100 kilos of white and dark chocolate and so many other delights, anyone with time on their hands and a love of cake should make a point of visiting the pretty town next Saturday.
Martins takes care to stress, however, that there is “much more to Olhão’s celebrations” than his wonderful cake. The council has a whole line-up of activities planned – all the more reason for people to visit!
