Loan debtors on the rise

At the end of March, nearly 700,000 Portuguese were falling behind on loan repayments. According to data from the Central de Responsabilidades do Crédito do Banco de Portugal (Bank of Portugal Centre for Credit Liabilities), the number of private loan holders behind on their repayments – 15.3% of the total – is the highest since the institution began recording this information (since 2009). Last year it stood at 14.6%.

With regard to mortgages, 148,717 families were unable to meet monthly repayments, representing 6.1% of the total loan debtors.
