ROGER Hubbard and Michaela Campbell arrived in the Algarve two years ago and took over Mike’s Bar in May 2003. Now entering their third season, Roger and Michaela have given Mike’s Bar a re-vamp and, from the new look inside to the ‘crazy’ jeep parked outside, Mike’s Bar is now known as the Salgados Rock Café.
Although the name has changed, the owners are anxious for their customers to realise that the same faces will continue to work behind the bar and in the kitchen.
When the summer kicks off, there will be live music every week, but if you can’t wait until then and to whet your appetite now, there will be some entertainment over Easter. On Saturday, March 26 at 9pm, Jiray will be playing a mixture of Brazilian, Latin and English music and, on Wednesday, March 30, João will be playing classics ranging from the Eagles to the Beatles.
Salgados Rock Café opens at 4pm from Tuesdays to Fridays and at noon on Saturdays and Sundays. Michaela opens the kitchen at 6.30pm during the week and from noon at the weekend. The menu consists of chicken, ribs, steaks and, with the use of a wood burning oven, Michaela’s home-made pizzas are a must-try. Snacks are also available. You can either eat there or use their take-away service. If you fancy a traditional English Sunday roast, go along from noon on a Sunday and the Salgados Rock Café won’t disappoint. In August, there will be a Bucking Bronco and BBQ every Sunday and, during the summer, the café will be open on Mondays as well.
Roger has designed and created the new interior décor, with modern restaurant tables, chairs and bar stools from his metalwork business in Pêra. The pool table, which used to occupy part of the restaurant, has been moved into a new games room, so those wishing to play games can while away the hours next door and leave diners to really enjoy their food. Roger and Michaela will carry on screening live sporting events.
