Lithium protests mark Tuesday Bank Holiday in Covas do Barroso

Following on from the 3rd protest camp in Covas de Barroso – designed to emphasise local opposition to plans for four open-pit lithium mines – residents and activists are today taking part in a protest in the village to underline their contention that “this project is against everything and everyone”. As Lusa explains, “the project proposed by Savannah Resources involves the construction of four open pit mines and the occupation of around 600 hectares just metres from the villages of Covas do Barroso, Romainho and Muro. If it goes ahead, it will be the largest open pit lithium mine in Europe.” According to locals – irrespective of government ‘permissions’/ ‘environmental impact green lights’ – this is one plan they will simply not tolerate.
