Lisbon suffers earthquake tremors

PORTUGUESE SEISMOLOGISTS have dismissed tremors felt last week in the Lisbon area as “nothing to worry about”. The vibrations of two seaquakes were felt in the capital in the afternoon of January 9 (5.1 on the Richter scale) and the early hours of January 10 (5 on the Richter scale), according to the Institute of Meteorology. “This kind of activity is not unusual in the area,” said a spokesman for the institute, adding that normally 15 to 20 such tremors occur in the region per year. According to the same source, there were no reports of damage from the tremors, although several people working or living in high-rise buildings reported feeling the earth shake.
