LISBON’S 21 speed traps caught 56 per cent fewer speeding motorists in the first three months of 2008 than the last quarter of 2007.
According to information gathered by Lisbon’s Municipal Police, the radars have taken 314,580 photographs since July 2007, of which only 17 per cent pertained to January-March 2008.
The vast majority of infractions related to excessive speed on the part of 141,032 vehicles.
Along the entire period under study, the largest number of registered infractions occurred in August (53,447), while the least numbers caught speeding was in February 2008 (10,526).
The new Marques Tunnel, which has a maximum speed limit of 50kph, registered the most infractions (66,055) or 21 per cent of the total.
This was followed by Avenida da Índia (14.5 per cent) and Avenida Infante Dom Henrique. (10 per cent).
