THE EUROPEAN Commission has thrown down the gauntlet for Greater Lisbon to develop a comprehensive maritime tourist strategy.
It believes that the Portuguese are not motivated sufficiently in making the most of their coastline and says that the tourist industry could be more dynamic in that area.
Commissioner Tiago Pitta e Cunha, recently launched a stinging attack on the Commission for the Coordination and Development of Lisbon and the Tagus Valley saying it should develop a seaward looking strategy.
During a seminar entitled ‘Oceans: New Horizons, New Challenges’ the EU Commissioner for Fisheries challenged Lisbon to be the European Capital of the Oceans like other countries are trying to do with their maritime capitals.
He said that Portugal should develop a tourist industry incorporating the sun, beach and sea and not just sun, beach and hotel. CG
