Lisbon set to sparkle New Year

ONCE AGAIN Lisbon’s former Expo site will be the place to be to see dazzling firework displays on New Year’s Eve.

This year, brewery Super Bock, in partnership with the Parque das Nações Shopkeepers Association, Associação de Lojistas do Parque das Nações, will be once again sponsoring the festive celebrations at the Torre Vasco da Gama.

The best-selling beer from Unicer is already putting up the country’s largest billboard to advertise the event, with workers suspended by harnesses a hair-raising 145 metres above ground to fix the canvas hording which measures 500sqm, is 6m high and 70m wide.

The Parque das Nações will also be decorated with a total of 12 canvas sail cloths which will decorate the roofs of bars and restaurants and Christmas lights along the Tágides Promenade.

This year, the traditional fireworks display, apart from being at Praça do Comércio, will also light up the night sky in a blaze of colour along the waterfront, starting with a shower of white incandescent fireworks cascading down from the Torre Vasco da Gama.

The main fireworks display, expected to last 30 minutes, will be launched from the safety of six boats moored in the Tejo River, lighting up the entire river in front of the Pavilhão Atlântico (Atlantic Pavilion). This year’s firework display is being put on by company Postal Ilustrado.
