Lisbon named one of “World’s Most Romantic Cities”

American magazine Food&Wine has named Lisbon one of the “World’s Most Romantic Cities’.

The Portuguese capital is the seventh city of a top-10 list, headed by Buenos Aires (Argentina), San Sebastian (Spain) and Edinburgh (Scotland).

“Although Lisbon embraces the past, its glorious old buildings house new restaurants, clothing boutiques and museums that have made the city one of Europe’s hippest – and most affordable – cultural destinations,” writes the magazine.

Food&Wine recommends Bairro Alto Hotel as a great place for lovebirds, highlighting that “it is considered Lisbon’s first contemporary boutique hotel” and boasts 55 rooms that “blend traditional Portuguese design with lush touches like flat-screen TVs and plush bed linens”.

Lisbon’s food is an added bonus, with “Restaurante 560 paying homage to simple Portuguese staples like octopus and farinheira (black pork sausage) by reinterpreting them in inspired ways: Octopus is deep-fried and served with rice and sautéed sprouts, while farinheira comes wrapped in phyllo pastry.”

The full top-10 is as follows:

• Buenos Aires (Argentina)
• San Sebastian (Spain)
• Edinburgh (Scotland)
• San Francisco (USA)
• Fez (Morocco)
• Prague (Czech Republic)
• Lisbon (Portugal)
• Kyoto (Japan)
• New York City (USA)
• Jaipur (India)
