Bit by bit, Lisbon’s emblematic old shops are disappearing. Landlords have realised they can make much more money selling their properties to aspirant hoteliers, or other forms of business, and the old guard is quietly becoming extinct. Latest casualty has been downtown DEUSA, a shoe shop with over 70 years of history, now due to make way for another hotel. UACS (the union of commercial and services associations) is urging Lisbon council to formulate a protective strategy for similar establishments (Lojas com História/ Shops with History) before they all disappear.
