Lisbon likely to host Champions League

UEFA is set to announce next Wednesday (June 17) plans for the remaining rounds of the Champions League and the Europa League.

It is likely to include the scrapping of the usual two-leg format in favour of one-off games for the quarter-finals and semi-finals which, together with the final, would all be played at one venue.

Estádio da Luz, Lisbon home of Benfica, is the favourite option to host the tournament as there are no Portuguese sides left in the competition. Atletico Madrid’s Wanda Metropolitano and Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena are reportedly contenders, but both teams are still in the competition. The final was due to have been played at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium on May 30 in Istanbul.

The last Champions League fixtures took place on March 11 and it is still unclear how the four outstanding last-16 ties will be completed.
