Lisbon has been voted by travel agents and professionals worldwide as the best city in Europe to visit in 2009.
The city was the big winner of this year’s World Travel Awards (WTA), described by the Wall Street Journal as the ‘Oscars’ of the global travel and tourism industry.
The city also scooped up ‘Europe’s leading cruise destination’ at the Awards, which were announced during a gala ceremony at the historic Portuguese town of Óbidos last week.
Portugal bagged yet another gong when the Hotel Praia D’El Rey Marriott Golf & Beach Resort walked away with the ‘Best European Golf & Leisure Resort’.
The winners will now make the list of nominees for the WTA Grand Final on November 8 at the Grosvenor House, A JW Marriott Hotel in London.
In the European category, Lufthansa won the title of ‘Europe’s Leading Airline’ and the Marriott Hotels Resorts & Suites netted ‘Europe’s Leading Brand Hotel’ award.
Nearly 1,500 travel companies were nominated in 177 categories.
