A new list of the world’s most expensive cities ranks Lisbon as number 137, three spots lower than last year.
The Portuguese capital does not even feature in the top 100 of Mercer’s annual Cost of Living Survey despite being one of Europe’s trendiest cities.
Luanda (Angola) took the top spot, followed by Hong Kong, Tokyo, Zurich and Singapore.
The survey includes hundreds of cities across five continents and measures the cost of more than 200 items in each location, including housing, transportation, food, clothing, household goods, and entertainment.
For example, renting a three-room apartment in Lisbon costs around €2,000 while doing the same in Luanda is five times more expensive (€12,000). Going to the movies is also three times cheaper in Lisbon than in London.
