TWO MEN have been arrested at Lisbon airport on charges of trafficking heroin. Police recovered a haul of drugs with an estimated street value of 330,000 euros. One man, carrying four kilos of heroin, was travelling from Holland via Cape Verde, in what police believe was an attempt to evade suspicion. The other, a 27-year-old man, was preparing to embark on a flight to Ponta Delgada, in the Azores, with a kilo-and-a-half of drugs in his hand luggage. The first detainee, a 40-year-old Portuguese man from the Lisbon suburbs, had no criminal record and led an outwardly respectable life. But police confirmed that he had been under investigation for two months. “He came from Holland with a stop over in Cape Verde, a place that often serves as a drug supply point. This route was used to try to throw authorities off the scent. There are also indications that this was not his first trip,” said a source.
