In response to the letter from Mr. Warwick Taylor from Australia who is currently enjoying Alcantarilha (welcome sir), I agree in principal that people such as Mr. Taylor should be made welcome and provided with a more flexible visa extension facility and the possibility to apply for a longer visa from their home country. But the current situation is understandable and obviously designed to limit the stays of “undesirables”. I wonder what the situation is in Australia? If, for example, a well-off Portuguese citizen wishes to spend 6 months there would it be any easier? As one of the smallest and thereby less influential Schengen members, I do not think Portugal can be expected to press for changes in a law that would affect all of the other nations especially taking into consideration the free movement across borders.
