The prevalence of tobacco consumption in Portugal increased to 51% from 48.8% between 2017 and 2022 and that of alcohol consumption from 49.1% to 56.4%, while the use of sedatives stood at 13.0%, down from 22.%5 in 2001. The data is part of the 5th National Survey on Psychoactive Substance Use in the General Population 2022, organised by the government’s Intervention Service on Additive Behaviours and Dependencies (SICAD), which portrays the latest information on the use of illicit, licit, gambling and screen substances.
