Lifeguards ‘missing’ from key Algarve beaches

Faro ports authority has closed off key beaches in the Algarve due to concessions not employing the correct number of lifeguards (one per 50 metre stretch of sand).

The beaches are in Quarteira and Almancil , and the problem stems from businesses running the concessions claiming that there are simply not enough lifeguards available.

The way ahead, says ports captain Cortes Lopes, may be to ‘reduce the size of concession areas”.
