German supermarket chain Lidl is building a new supermarket in Armação de Pêra, where it is also teaming up with Silves Council to construct an urban park in the Quinta dos Arcos urbanisation.
The supermarket is currently under construction on a vacant plot of land which was previously used as a car park by the local football club Os Armacenenses near Avenida General Humberto Delgado. It is due to open in March.
But the supermarket chain will also look to give something back to the local community with the construction of an urban park near the supermarket. The protocol making the deal official between the local council and the supermarket chain was signed last week.
As Silves Mayor Rosa Palma pointed out, the local council tries to make sure the municipality always gains something “whenever there is an investment made by developers of this magnitude”.
The 8,000sqm urban park will be open to the whole population and will include a “multifunctional” grass pitch, a skatepark, an amphitheatre and a stage for events as well as a variety of sports fields. According to Lidl, it is due to open this summer.
João Duarte, Lidl Portugal’s general director for the south, says the chain’s objective is always to improve the quality of life of communities it becomes a part of.
“The Quinta dos Arcos Urban Park is an important project for us and we hope it can make a difference to the lives of the local population,” he added.
