Why five Hamlets? Because it is every comic actor’s secret wish to play Hamlet – so let them all do it. Because Hamlet is such a complex character that he can be interpreted in widely different ways – so let’s show them all.
Although Aperitivo Performance Group’s writer has taken plenty of liberties with the script – simplifying some of the language, ruthlessly cutting out large sections so that the play is fast moving and gripping to a modern audience, inventing new characters (two cleaning ladies and a cat) to increase the comedy level – the speeches of Hamlet himself remain largely untouched and can be enjoyed in all their Shakespearian beauty.
Performed as an audition and rehearsal of Hamlet, Hamletarama! is a moving, funny and thought-provoking version of the classic tragedy.
The piece is staged “in the round” to ensure that all the audience gets not only a good view, but also feels as if they are part of the Hamletarama! experience.
Hamletarama! will be performed at the São Brás Museum, on Friday March 16 at 1.30pm and 7.30pm, Saturday March 17 at 7.30pm.
Tickets cost €10 and €8 for members. Another performance will take place at the Casa do Povo in Moncarapacho on Sunday, March 18 at 9pm. Tickets cost €7 and members pay €5.
