Less traffic

The Algarve’s A22 motorway, Via do Infante, was the toll-free road which registered the greatest fall in traffic in the first five months of 2009.

According to the national road company Estradas de Portugal (EP), the biggest drop was in March, the same month as the hotel industry recorded the largest drop in hotel occupancy.

The average fall in traffic levels throughout the first five months of this year along the A22 was three per cent.

Algarve civil governor Isilda Gomes said that the decrease is likely due to the current economic crisis as well as the price of fuel.
