AN EMPLOYEE of the Portuguese bank Banco Portugues de Investimento (BPI) working in Rua Casal Ribeiro in Lisbon has been hospitalised suffering from Legionnaires’ disease.
The rare pneumonia caused by the bacteria legionella was later found at the bank’s branch within the air conditioning system. José Amaral, Director of BPI said: “We are awaiting confirmation that the bacterium has been eliminated. We have advised all employees with flu-like symptoms to come forward.” The disease can kill around 30 per cent of all serious cases if left untreated.
