Portugal’s Left Bloc political party is calling for an urgent parliamentary hearing of the director-general of the Tax Authority and the Secretary of State for tax affairs over the delay in assessing the Douro dams for the purpose of charging municipal property tax (IMI). This is a long running battle – powered by local citizens – but it is clear that even in ‘succeeding’ in getting acknowledgement that IMI on the sale is due, this still may result in nothing. As Left Bloc coordinator warns: “There is a chance that EDP, once again, will evade paying tax… (…) We don’t accept, and we don’t understand this injustice, why EDP continues to be privileged in this country…”
