Portugal’s Bloco de Esquerda (left wing) party is making a new bid for the legalisation of same-sex adoptions. The initiative comes after BE’s first attempt bombed in 2013 – along with a Socialist plan for a referendum on the subject. BE maintains the lack of legislation allowing homosexual couples to adopt children is “an unjustifiable discrimination”, particularly as same-sex marriages are now permissible under Portuguese law.
