Left Bloc elects new leader at 13th convention

Mariana Mortágua is the new face of a cycle of continuity in Portugal’s Left Bloc political party, following the 13th Convention over the weekend, taking up the fight against the “torment of the absolute PS majority” and with calls for a “frontal left”. The vote on the guideline motions proved Mortágua’s expressive victory and represents not only continuity but the strengthening of the party’s official line in the National Bureau, says Lusa. Mortágua won 67 of the 80 votes in BE’s highest body between conventions, while an opposing motion, from internal critics, only got 13.
