Europa Algarve is a language school in the old part of Loulé that offers students the opportunity to learn Portuguese in a friendly and sociable environment.
Established in 1984 by long-term resident Mary Jo Morgan, Europa Algarve is “the only language school in Loulé to be recognised by the Ministry of Education”.
“We insist on highly trained and experienced teachers for teaching Portuguese,” she said.
Group courses, maximum of three people, which consist of two, one-and-a-half hour lessons per week, are available at the school.
Individual courses and courses for couples who want to learn together are also available at Europa Algarve.
The courses are structured so pupils are put into the correct group depending on their standard of Portuguese.
Beginners must start with an all-beginner group but students who have previous experience in Portuguese can fit into an existing class. “I am always asked how long it takes to learn Portuguese,” Mary Jo said. “I think it all depends on how motivated and dedicated people are to learn the language.”
The school has remained small and the number of pupils attending at any one time can fluctuate from 50 to 100.
“All ages are welcome; our oldest pupil was 92 as he said he wanted to keep his brain active. We also have a lot of retired couples who have moved here and want to learn Portuguese,” Mary Jo said. “We have students who are young adults setting up businesses in the Algarve and who need to know Portuguese.”
Europa Algarve also teaches English, Spanish, French and German.
The school can be found on Rua José Fernandes Guerreiro, 66M, 8100-598 Loulé.
