A culinary demonstration on how to make “popias” – a Christmas biscuit typical of the Eastern Algarve and the Alentejo – will be held at Tavira’s municipal museum on Saturday (December 12), starting at 10.30am.
The workshop will be led by Otília Cardeira, the president of the Associação de Artes e Sabores de Tavira.
It is part of the ‘Dieta Mediterrânica Todo o Ano’ (Mediterranean Diet All Year Long) programme, which aims to promote activities related to the UNESCO-prized diet and other traditions in Tavira.
There is only room for 25 people, so anyone interested is advised to sign up quickly. Registration costs €2.
Popias are made with olive oil, cinnamon, brown sugar and butter. They are not “very sweet”, but are perfect to serve with a cup of coffee or tea. A number of recipes are available online for those unable to attend the workshop.
