‘Woofland by Iron Dog’, located at Mar Shopping Algarve in Loulé, has begun a series of workshops on animal wellness this month which will touch on topics such animal behaviour, potentially dangerous breeds and grooming.

The animal wellness centre reopened in October under the management of Quarteira’s award-winning dog school Iron Dog Algarve.

“The lack of specialised training in the animal area is a gap that has been needing to be filled for a long time in the region,” says Woofland by Iron Dog in a statement.

This series of workshops is being organised to “fight this trend and equip animal owners with more knowledge so that they can make more informed decisions,” it adds.

The first workshop was held on Saturday (December 10) and focused on animal nutrition.

This will be followed by a workshop on Friday, December 16 at 6pm in which trainer Marco Serrão will focus on bio-detection dogs – in other words, dogs which are trained to use their exceptional power of smell.

On the same day, photographer Carlos Filipe (known by many for his amazing collaborations with animal associations which see him taking wonderful photos of stray animals in need of a home) will lead a Christmas-themed photography session for animals inside Mar Shopping Algarve between 5.30pm and 10pm.

The photography session will be repeated on January 14, the same day in which certified dog trainer João Paulino will lead a workshop on dangerous or potentially dangerous dog breeds.

The following day (January 15) will see Daiana Ferreira from animal association KOKUA tackling the subject of assistance dogs at 6pm, focusing on how the human-animal interaction brings “emotional, cognitive and physical benefits” to both parties.

Welcoming a new pet into the family will be the theme of a workshop led by Ricardo Lima on February 4 at 6pm, while another photo session will be held on February 12 under the theme of ‘Carnaval’.

Cats will also have their own special workshop event on February 25 at 6pm, with veterinarian Sara Alves touching upon some of the most important subjects such as food, hygiene and health.

Last but not least, certified trainer and founder of animal beauty parlour Pet’s Glamour, Vera Fernandes, will lead an event focusing on “basic hygiene care for cats and dogs” where participants can learn the basics on their pet’s hygiene needs. This will include everything from a step-by-step guide on how to give them baths from how to cut their nails.
